These are some of the questions we at Michigan Pure Painting Ann Arbor would be asking our homeowners to better help them get a feel for whether or not they would be good to have their homes painted by themselves.

Step 1: Analyze the situation

When you first start painting, it is important to assess your situation. When it comes to painting the exterior of your home, the homeowner needs to analyze their exterior to see if it is time to paint. Typically, you will know it is time to paint if your exterior is peeling or flaking paint off the exterior wall. If there is peeling, then you will know it is time to start addressing the problem. If it is left unattended, the paint will begin to flake off and thus exposing your home to the exterior elements of weather. Once your exterior is exposed, then it will put the wood in a place to be damaged. The more weather and rain exposure the wood has, the more work and repair will need to be done in the future.

Step 2: Painting Preparation

Once you realize it is time to paint, it is important that you begin to prepare the surface. At this moment, the paint has probably faded which leaves it with a very thin layer. It also may be peeling or cracking. With any of these painting problems, you will need to make sure the surface is prepared so that paint will attach to the wood. This means that you will need to spend time scraping off the paint. Typically, people will use scrapers. Sometimes, people will use pressure washers to take off the paint. Either way, it is important that you get the surface clean and smooth so that the paint will stick.

Step 3: Prime the Exterior

In order to have the paint do its best work, then you need to be able to prime the wood of the house. The primer will attach to the wood and give a solid finish for the paint to attach to. You can find primer at many of the local paint stores or do it yourself stores like Lowes or Home Depot.

Step 4: Begin Painting Your Home

It is at this moment that you are ready to paint your home. To find the paint you would need to go to a paint store to work through the type of paint you would need. They will also be able to help you think through the color that you would need. Sometimes they have color consultation experts on site that can better help you figure out what you need.

Hopefully, this has been a helpful article to better help you think through how you can choose to paint your home. If you are a do it yourself person, you could definitely do this. However, you need to know what you are getting into.
